Although this past week seems to have been slower, we've been doing something steadily.
Some of the things we've been doing.... I have been working with the kids daily on school work. I have a Language and Math daily practice book that Skylar and I go over each day. He reads a Spanish and English guided reader, and then he reads the English one to me, translating it into Spanish! We also started a weekly guided reader in English on his grade level to keep his comprehension and skills up to par. With Sydney, I'm catching her up on pages that the kindergarten teacher has already covered here, so she will be ready when she arrives to class. A couple of her books were different here, so we are covering those areas as well. She loves her "homework," and she begs for us to begin each day. Over the past couple of weeks, I've been teaching her sight words, and she is beginning to pick up on reading well! We've also been reading guided readers, too. I know it's "summer time," but I don't want them to lapse before they hit their new school here at the end of February. These activities take up a little portion of the day.
I've also gotten back to exercising. I am feeling so much better. I had neglected a routine in C.R., because of time, studies, and fear of being on the street alone. We picked up an exercise bike from a couple who were leaving for the States for cheap, and it has proven to be very useful so far! Every other day, I've been working out on the Wii Fitness Plus, thanks to all of our family who sent us Christmas money and me birthday money!
Thanks for your prayers with the traffic issues going on with me. I still have a LONG ways to go, but I am not QUITE as anxious when riding. It IS getting better! I still have a LONG ways to go with my driving, BUT I am getting some directions down pat. This place is huge, and the streets are very busy, so it is not easy coming from a city of 20,000, to a city of 8+ million! I KNOW....God has His reasons.... :D
B. has started scheduling our team's first translators to churches that will be coming in during the year and will be going into the jungles and mountain areas. He also has registered for 2 online seminary classes at New Orleans, which will begin soon.
After what seems to be a long time to get here (the application process, our training in the States, 1 trimester of language school, and now HERE), it was such an awesome feeling to finally meet the students and translators that God has sent us to work with and alongside! Knowing we are unworthy, but yet He chose US for a specific reason, to share with peoples here and in places throughout Peru about HIM, and to teach us to be more like HIM. On Saturday, we had a cookout for all students/translators. Over 40 Peruanos showed up, plus all of us Gringos. Our leaders grilled hamburgers. We opted for Sandi to continue teaching for several classes so that we may observe where the students are in their learning/her teaching. Our job is to teach them English. share the Gospel, and disciple them. We will have Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced classes, each with a Bible Study, in addition, to an additional 2-hour Bible Study each week (a total of 4 classes). Each person gave us such a warm welcome! We look forward to working with them throughout our time here.
People from our team as well as other teams have been very nice to us, calling to check on us. Each week, someone has invited us to attend a different church.
We have had a gap in our language learning while here. Spanish is much faster here, and the way it is spoken sounds differently. After four weeks here, we are finally beginning to grasp a few words. Little by little. Pray for continued learning!
FATHER GOD, PLEASE HELP US TO BE HUMBLE, TO STAY CLOSE TO YOU DAILY THROUGH YOUR WORD AND TIME TALKING WITH YOU, TO LISTEN, TO FOLLOW YOU DAILY IN OBEDIENCE. TEACH US TO BE LIKE YOU MORE EACH DAY. GROW US CLOSER AS A FAMILY. LET OUR WORDS, ACTIONS, AND THOUGHTS REPRESENT YOU ALWAYS, AND LET OUR LIVES BE A LIGHT FOR OTHERS TO FIND YOU...ALL FOR YOUR GLORY ALONE!!
